Motorcycle Accident Statistics

Over the last few decades, motorcycle accident fatalities have been on the rise. According to California Highway Patrol, from 1994 to 2016, deaths from motorcycle accidents have risen 5.7 percent. Motorcycle fatalities make up more than 14% of all traffic fatalities in the United States, even though they account for just 3% of registered vehicles.

California is one of the worst states for motorcycle fatalities. It currently ranks in the top 15 states for motorcycle accident deaths. Lane sharing or lane splitting is one of the possible reasons for the upwards trend. California remains the only state where lane splitting is legal. While it does reduce freeway congestion, it can increase the risk to motorcycle riders.
