PEDESTRIAN SAFETY TIPS

Here are a few safety tips for all of us whose commute involves walking to work, school, or anywhere for that matter. It is common knowledge that when driving on a roadway, we must be on the lookout for potential dangers, including people. However, as pedestrians, we too must exercise some caution to ensure our safety on the roadways.

Tip #1: Look both ways before crossing the road. Make sure you have a clear view of the road and that there aren’t any vehicles traveling at high speed that may be an immediate danger.

Tip #2: Before entering a crosswalk, ensure that you have a traffic walk signal. In California, pedestrians generally have the right-of-way unless crossing against a traffic signal. That is because pedestrians are required to avoid conduct that would make themselves an “immediate hazard” to oncoming traffic. (See Cal. Veh. Code § 21950.)

Tip #3: Avoid crossing mid-block or between two parked cars. Ensure that vehicles on the road can see you before crossing the street.

Tip #4: Use the sidewalks when out for a walk, jog, or run. They are simply the safest place for a pedestrian on the roadway.

Tip #5: Practice common sense. Stay alert, conscious of the roadways, and avoid texting when crossing the street, especially at busy intersections.
