Three Killed When Driver Plows Through Homeless Encampment

On March 15, a driver killed three people and injured six when he drove through a homeless encampment located on a sidewalk in downtown San Diego. The driver has been identified as Craig Voss, a 71-year-old man who was driving through a tunnel near the community college when his station wagon veered off the road and onto the sidewalk.

The driver was arrested at the scene and faces multiple serious counts of causing great bodily harm, felony DUI, and vehicular manslaughter. Law enforcement did not state whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol but said additional charges may be coming.

The driver was reported to have got out of his car to help, co-operated with law enforcement, and did not try to flee.

This tragic event just highlights the danger that the homeless population faces when sleeping on sidewalks adjacent to busy streets. San Diego is attempting to take a more proactive approach in finding shelter for those looking for help.
